Pictured above: Boats at anchor on Lake Michigan below Chicago's skyline. IL is the #1 worst retirement state at Topretirements, but Chicago is the 58th most popular town on the site. Go figure. We were honored to have our "10 Worst Retirement States" feature picked up by the national media. The Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch, The Huffington Post, and Consumerist.com all ran extensive coverage - with attendant controversy on this regrettably negative topic. Back in November we criticized a list of the worst retirement states from another website. So to put our money where our mouth was, we produced our own list of the worst 10. Our list is heavily weighted on the states' fiscal health, taxes, and climate - while acknowledging there are many other factors to consider. We've got links to the other sites (MarketWatch & Huffington Post) that picked up and elaborated on our feature. Click on a state to see reviews of 610 great retirement towns, plus a list of 1,183 active adult communities. We don't know about you, but an awful lot of our friends have children who have moved to Seattle - that Mecca for young people. So rather than enriching the airlines with your frequent visits, why not relocate out there yourself? It has many advantages - no state income tax, it is a very cool and livable city, and it's blessed with a solid economic base. Nearby towns and the San Juan Islands aren't bad either! Allianz Financial ran a retirement study earlier this year. They had some most interesting observations, including this startler: many retirees fear running out of money more than they fear death! They also came up with some psychological "categories" to describe all of us. To contrast their labels we came up with our own list, plus a "Ready for Retirement" Checklist. It's a totally free and no-hassle way to stay up to date. Aiken, SCSouth Carolina seems better known for its coastal areas like Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach. But the central and western parts of the state are pretty nice too, with no better example than Aiken, the "Winter Colony". Famous for its horse racing, this charming town used to be the place where the wealthy coastal crowd escaped the summer heat. Now it's home to many active adult communities.
